For close to 25 years, I’ve been photographing comedians, musicians and other faces of people who I find interesting.
Many of the images have been used in marketing and advertising for the acts, on cd’s, dvd’s, books covers and now on streaming platforms.
After a bit of a break, I needed a new project to build up my creativity juices… but I needed an idea.
And out of the blue it came to me.
Back in the early days, I wanted to photograph big multi-page spreads that ran in fancy magazines. The kind of magazines my heroes photographed for and for which they had parties after the Oscars or Grammies.
Those kinds of magazines still exist overseas, but most of the Australian ones have disappeared so I can’t photograph for them even if I wanted to.
So i’m taking matters into my own hands again*
The “As photographed for…” series is a series of editorial portraits of comedians, musicians, creatives, and just interesting people photographed for completely made-up media outlets.
And if you are on this page, I’d love to have you involved.
*The first music festival media pass I received was for photographing for a fictional magazine I put on the application. It worked out ok; they asked me back the following year with an AAA pass photographing for them. So you could say this project has been over 20 years in the making.
What’s the plan?
At the moment i’m building the folio of images. Working around my regular work and family life, there is limited time for this but ideally i’m going to be snapping at least two sessions a month.
When I have enough to kick off the project I’ll be working on presenting the series. This is still a work in progress with a few ideas on simmer.
One idea is that this will be my “podcast” where I release a patreon-style email / blog post with a series of the images.
Ideally, I hope to make this into a “magazine” book, either a one-off event or an annual magazine.
Who’s already in the bag?
I’ll be adding to this page when new sessions take place. Have a scroll about to see who’s already sitting on hard drives.
Who are you?
Hi, I’m Alan, or more commonly known as Wombat in the comedy world. Click here if you want some more background and see what else I’ve done with the comedy / arts world. Maybe even some awards I’ve picked up.
